FAMILY UNITED

Welcome to the homepage of the “Family United” Sponsorship Group.

We are a group of local volunteers committed to resettling a Syrian family from a refugee camp in Jordan to Canada.

In Canada, the family will be reunited with other family members who arrived in 2018.  Sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins together again.

In Canada, the children can attend school and live normal lives, free from unsafe and hostile circumstances.

In Canada, the parents can witness their children develop diverse skills and interests otherwise unfathomable in the confines of a camp.

This family escaped the terror of the Syrian war, and sought temporary refuge in an UN refugee camp in Jordan. Temporary is a long time. They have been stuck there for 12 years, living in the barest of shelters without protection from the intense summer heat or the cold wet winter.

As the sponsor group, we are committed to supporting the family. We will help them learn the practicalities of life in Canada and help them integrate successfully in their new community.  However, before they are permitted to call Canada home, our group must raise enough money to support the family during their first year here. Please help us by donating to our cause or attending one of our funding raising events

Jasmine’s Story

Imagine if your children were born in a refugee camp. Life in a tent is what they know. Lining up for urgent care, or life essentials. Looking through the wire fences at those living freely beyond. To them, this is life.

How long could you endure this situation? Consider that this family has been doing so for 12 gruelling years. Syrian refugees who managed a dangerous escape from the war and bloodshed were placed in a Jordanian refugee camp, and remain there.

In our world, most would consider it prison, a perpetual limbo of limited hopes and dreams.

We are less than 10 people with a big goal. Over 80,000.00 is needed to meet the criteria to see them finally move from the camp, and settle in Canada for the first year as determined by immigration rules. Under the watchful eye of the Intercultural Association Victoria, a registered charity, which supervises and manages all funds raised. All donations of $20.00 or more receive a tax receipt.

The dollars guarantee a roof over their heads for their first year in Canada. Medical and dental assistance, if necessary. Help with furnishings and household basics and guidance in areas such as English language classes and other educational help that will aid them in establishing themselves in our country.

Help us re-unite the sisters, the two families. We’ve already watched those who have arrived become valued citizens here in Victoria. Help us finish the task.

We want to acknowledge how much help the family already here in the city is to our group- helping us with garage sales, baking sweets for sale. Cooking up local dishes for fundraising dinner events. Every family member, including children, pitching in to help get the remainder of their family out of the camp and into Canada.

Now, we would like to ask you. The BIG ASK. How much can you donate? Keep the tax receipt in mind. What can you do? $20, $50, $200, $500, $1,000, $5,000? Whatever the number, we look forward to the day when we can personally introduce you to Jasmine and her family.

Please go to the link at the top right of our home page. Click on the tab to donate. Follow the instructions. You can make your contribution directly and that ensures the tax receipt will come straight to you.

Make a difference. Feel Wonderful. Help us re-unite this family!
